The Cloudy Month of July

One of the highlights of summertime for me is spending sunset in the field with the pet sheep. The golden light from the setting sun makes for some dramatic lighting in photos and the warmth of the day fading away is a wonderful feeling. This year, however, the stunning sunsets have been few and far between. Adding to the complications this year is the sheer number of pet lambs that crowd around my feet when I visit them in the field. Very often I don't know where to start pointing my camera! I get nibbled on, jumped up at and generally hassled by these lovely wee lambs.

I took the following photos over several days spanning the month of July.

On this evening I walked a lap of the field, taking photos of whoever decided to follow me.

Ivy.

Margot.

Pearl.

Lucy.

Enid.

I was left alone while I walked along the bottom fence and back up to the top of the hill. I met Heather at the gate.

Penny.

Heather.

Emily.

I sat and watched the sheep for a while.

Esther.

The grass was growing well in the milder weather but so were the weeds. I distracted the sheep one afternoon while Dad drove into the field with the tractor and topper.

Tilly.

Eamon.

Mother and son.

Eli.

Eugene.

Pearl.

Primrose and friends.

Violet.

Eunice.

I spent a quiet Sunday afternoon with my wee woolly friends.

Beth.

Pearl, Nancy and Lucy watching me through the wire.

I went for a Sunday morning lap of the field the following week. Nancy and Pearl were relaxing by the feeder.

Holly was following me as I started my walk, and she brought some of the others along as well.

Mabel posing on that big stone again.

Walking down the hill with Holly, Martha, Daisy and Mabel in tow.

Mabel, Martha, Holly, Daisy and some other blurry lambs still following me, this time up the hill. Usually the lambs get bored or distracted by grass near the bottom of the hill and walk up here alone. It was really sweet that they stuck with me this time.

Another grey evening spent with the pets - I encountered Penny and her son Eugene first this time.

Titch.

And finally, as the month came to close, I went out with the camera again. This time the cloud cover wasn't as heavy.

Initially I had picked out sixteen pet ewe lambs to keep... well, now there are eighteen because I took pity on Angie and Hazel. They both have matured so nicely, I didn't want them to get eaten. This is Hazel:

And Angie, Margie's twin sister.

The rest of the lambs are doing well outside so far. Enid looks slightly different every time I see her.

Ivy.

Margie.

Daisy.

Wendy and Beth chewing their cuds by the tree stump.

Violet was there too.

Pearl and Martha.

Nancy joining the tree stump gang.

Eunice.

To sit or not to sit?

Pearl eyeing the spot.

Very comfy.

Daisy.

A very relaxed flock.

Nancy.

Violet thought the tree stump was getting crowded so she moved over the fence.

Beth, Pearl and Wendy.

Nancy.

Eunice again.

So that was July according the pet sheep - at least we saw a nice sunset in the end.
