Morning Has Broken

Checking the flocks becomes a huge, never-ending job in winter. There's mud everywhere, it's cold and wet, and everyone needs extra food. I help out when I'm not busy with something else. There's always something relaxing about checking the sheep on a quad with as many dogs as you can fit on board.

I checked on the ram lambs first. They're very curious boys.

I always find it funny that Dave, the smallest of the lambs, always manages to be surrounded by some of the biggest.

Blue Belle was temporarily a member of the flock containing the ewe lambs to be sold.

Jess... that can't be comfortable.

Teddy took breaks from the quad when I was taking photos.

Jess liked to remain on board.

There's room in the box for two.

Blue Belle watched us over the fence.

Then she did some trotting.

Last to be checked were the ewe-lambs.

I managed to get a half-decent photo of one of the Kerry Hills, Malcolm.

And Gloria too (she's the one with an indecipherable GLORIA written on her side).

So, yes, looking the sheep can be very relaxing.

...And very cold. Time for a nice hot drink.

Black & White Sunday #13 ::: To Be Loved

He may not have the top spot in the pack, but floppy-eared, twitchy-nosed Ben is held in the highest of esteem by everyone.

In this pack of eccentric Border Collies, Ben is the Sprollie glue that unites them all.

From Jess' manic licky-face, to Pip's play-with-me sliding tackle, everyone wants to play with him.

Ben is different, and he is loved.

Next Door Some More

It's always nice to see Samson again.

I take him and Lady for a walk now and again. Ben tags along. Both Lady and Samson are always happy to see us.

Lady loves to run.

Samson hasn't completely forgotten how to pose on a wall.

Taking photos of Lady in front of the mountains was a bit harder.

Lady looks so alert in the above photos because the boys were sitting at my feet and licking my face while I was trying to take pictures. Sammy was the main offender.

Brown boys are silly.

Black & White Sunday #12 ::: Photographing Pip

I thought it would be interesting to make a video of me photographing each of the dogs. First up was a squinty-eyed, twitchy-nosed Pip.

I really didn't mean to ramble on for so long... oops.

So, did I manage to get any photos I liked? Well, one is my favourite.

I've cropped and rotated it into a more pleasing composition, and by some miracle, I actually managed to get it in focus. The one I took just before it isn't focused quite as well.

I like this one I took in the yard on the way to the field.

One thing I did learn while doing this is just how long it actually takes me to photograph anything.

And one final reminder, it is your last chance to vote for me if you wish to do so. Voting closes tomorrow, with the winner announced on Tuesday. You can vote more than once, too, so by all means, go nuts!

Click here to vote. Thank you very much!

Happy Sixth Birthday, Ben!

Yes, that's right - our resident Sprollie turns six today.

I took his best friend Teddy out shopping for a present. So much choice!

Maybe Ben would like a Christmassy toy.

Or some fish.

Teddy saw a rabbit and thought that would be the perfect present for his friend to chase. I pointed out that this might not be fair to the rabbit.

Bones, then. You can't go wrong with bones.

Present selected, we gave Ben some birthday attention in between downpours of rain and stormy winds.

Ben is every bit the gentleman.

Teddy had a bone too.

So a big happy birthday to Ben...

...from your best friend, Mr Teddy.

My Little Pony

When Blue Belle sees me, she begins to walk.

She doesn't run.

She might spot something interesting elsewhere.

But she doesn't stop.

Just keeps coming.

Closer.

The sheep can't understand why she'd come near a person.

But this is where Blue Belle likes to be.

Beside me.
